PSHE at Barnfields
At Barnfields, we believe every child should develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to become healthy, confident and responsible individuals. Our PSHE curriculum equips children to make informed choices, build positive relationships, keep themselves safe and prepare for life beyond primary school.
We deliver PSHE through the Jigsaw programme, which provides a carefully planned and progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of our pupils while reflecting our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Reflection and Positivity.
Each half term, pupils explore one of the six Jigsaw themes:
Our curriculum helps children develop emotional literacy, resilience, self-awareness and the confidence to make safe, positive choices both in school and beyond.
Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE)
Relationships, Health and Sex Education is an important part of our PSHE curriculum and supports both children's personal development and safeguarding.
Using the Jigsaw programme, children learn about:
- healthy friendships and family relationships
- physical and mental wellbeing
- personal safety and online safety
- consent and personal boundaries
- respecting diversity and equality
- growing up and puberty
Sex Education is taught within the Changing Me unit in Years 5 and 6. Lessons are delivered in an age-appropriate, factual and sensitive way, helping children understand the physical and emotional changes associated with growing up.
Children's Rights at Barnfields
Barnfields is proud to be a UNICEF Silver Rights Respecting School, where children's rights are embedded throughout school life. We believe that every child should feel valued, listened to and respected, and that understanding rights helps pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility towards themselves and others.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) provides the foundation for our approach. Through our curriculum, assemblies and everyday interactions, children develop an understanding of their rights and the importance of respecting the rights of those around them.
Within PSHE, pupils explore key rights including the right to an education (Article 28), the right to have their views heard and respected (Article 12), and the right to share their thoughts and opinions appropriately (Article 13). Children are encouraged to use their voice, express their ideas confidently and understand that they also have a responsibility to listen to and respect others.
By placing children's rights at the heart of our school community, we support pupils in becoming compassionate, respectful and active citizens who understand their role in creating a fair and inclusive world.
British Values
At Barnfields, British Values are woven throughout our curriculum and everyday school life, supporting our school values and helping children develop into respectful, responsible and active members of society. Our PSHE curriculum, supported by the Jigsaw programme, contributes significantly to the development of British Values through both explicit teaching and meaningful opportunities for children to reflect, discuss and apply these values in real-life contexts.
The five strands of British Values are embedded across our PSHE curriculum and revisited throughout the year:
- Democracy – encouraging children to use their voice, share their opinions and understand the importance of listening to others.
- The Rule of Law – helping children understand why rules, boundaries and laws are important in keeping communities safe and fair.
- Individual Liberty – supporting children to make informed choices, understand their rights and take responsibility for their actions.
- Mutual Respect – promoting kindness, empathy and appreciation of others, regardless of differences.
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs – developing an understanding and respect for diverse cultures, beliefs and backgrounds.
Through discussion, reflection and practical experiences, children develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to contribute positively to their school community and wider society.
