Key Information

All homework is given out on a Friday. Whilst it is not an obligation to hand it in, we are always happy to see what the children have managed to do at home.
Homework consists of a mixture of Maths and English, and is provided in order to consolidate learning. This means that any homework given will be based on what has happened in the lessons and children (in theory) should be able to access it independently. Unless stated, homework should take no longer than half an hour per week.
The children will be sent home with a reading book which will be matched to their reading level. This can be read at home and recorded in their reading diaries, which will be checked regularly by the class teacher. These reading books will be collected and changed every Thursday, ready to be sent out again on Friday.
- PE lessons will take place every Monday and Friday. Children must have full PE kit in school on these days. Earrings must be removed at home or children must be able to take out the earrings themselves. This is a crucial part of the curriculum and one in which all children should participate. All children in the school will have two hours of timetabled sport and PE per week. If your child is unable to take part (for a medical reason), please provide a note.

Autumn Term – Looking Ahead 🍂
Year 2 have an exciting term ahead, full of practical investigations, creative projects and fascinating history. Throughout the term, the children will be encouraged to ask questions, think critically and develop their independence as learners.
One of our exciting units this term is The Great Fire of London. Through our History lessons, we will travel back over 350 years to discover what life was like in Stuart London, investigate how the fire spread so rapidly and explore how the city was rebuilt afterwards. We'll be debating whether the Great Fire was ultimately a blessing or a disaster, using evidence to support our ideas.
Our learning in History will inspire work across other subjects too. In Art, we'll study the work of Vincent van Gogh, experimenting with colour mixing and expressive painting techniques to create dramatic fire-themed artwork. In Design and Technology, the children will design and build their own freestanding Tudor houses, helping them understand why so many buildings were destroyed during the fire.
In English, we'll be writing for a range of different purposes. We'll create vivid character descriptions inspired by Smelly Louie, produce informative pet care posters and write clear instructions explaining how to prepare a royal feast. These activities will help the children develop their creativity while also learning how to write for different audiences.
Our Maths lessons will continue to strengthen number confidence through place value, addition and subtraction and shape. Alongside this, children will deepen their understanding of numbers to 20 by comparing quantities, exploring number relationships and solving practical problems.
In Science, we'll become material investigators, exploring everyday materials such as wood, plastic, glass, metal and paper. Through hands-on investigations, we'll discover which materials are best suited for different jobs and how some can be bent, twisted, stretched or squashed without breaking.
We'll also broaden our understanding of the wider world in Geography, learning to identify the seven continents and five oceans and locating them on maps and globes.
Technology and creativity come together in Computing, where we'll learn about information technology in our everyday lives before developing our digital photography skills by taking and editing photographs for different purposes.
Music will bring plenty of opportunities to sing, perform and move as we explore South African-inspired rhythms before beginning to learn festive songs later in the term.
Alongside all of this, children will continue developing important life skills through PE, RE and RSHE, building confidence, resilience, kindness and teamwork as they settle into another exciting year at Barnfields.
