Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to the Year 2 page. Within this section of the website, you will find useful information to help support your child. This may include information on trips, PE days, homework, timetables and much more.

Meet the team:

Miss Mobley (2M)

Miss Collins (2C)

Mrs Staphnill, Miss Dean and Mrs Stephens (Teaching Assistants)

Mrs Turton (KS1 Lead)

Key Information:

PE :

All Year 2 children will participate in two P.E lessons weekly. These will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday

This is a crucial part of the curriculum and one in which all children should participate. If your child is unable to take part (due to a medical reason), please inform the office.

Please remember that all long hair needs to be tied back and earrings removed or flat back earrings must be worn.

Homework:

Reading books and homework will be given out on a Friday.

Homework consists of a mixture of Maths and/or English, but is provided in order to consolidate learning. This means that any homework given will be based on what has happened in the lessons and children (in theory) should be able to access it independently. Whilst it is not an obligation to hand it in, we are always happy to see what the children have managed to do at home.

The children will be sent home with a reading book which will be matched to their reading level. This can be read at home and recorded in their reading diaries, which will be checked regularly by the class teacher. These reading books will be collected and changed every Thursday, ready to be sent out again on Friday.

Curriculum and Learning:

Autumn Term

This term, children will access a wide range of subjects within their learning. During Reading and English sessions, we will look at a variety of different texts, including The Word Collector and Smelly Louie. Maths will see children participate in lessons involving place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. In our afternoon lessons, the children will engage in exciting Wider Curricular subjects. In History, the children will be investigating the Great Fire of London and, in Geography, the children will be exploring the continents and oceans where they will continue to build on their atlas and map skills. During our Art lessons, we will be focusing on the artist Alice Fox and creating wax-resistant leaves.

Spring Term

In the Spring Term, our curriculum continues to be filled with exciting topics and creative opportunities for our Year 2 children. In Maths, we will continue exploring number concepts, with a focus on multiplication and division, while also developing a deeper understanding of measurement. In English, students will continue to write in a variety of genres, drawing inspiration from key texts like Ada Twist, The Scientist and The Bear and the Piano. In History, we will explore the life and work of George Stephenson, learning how his innovations in railways and trains revolutionised travel both locally and across the country! In Science, we will investigate animals, including humans, through hands-on experiments and enquiries that spark curiosity and foster scientific thinking. In Geography, students will conduct a comparative study of the UK and India, examining the similarities between the two countries while celebrating their unique differences. In PE, we will enhance gymnastics skills, focusing on core shapes and new techniques, as well as developing multi-skills through fun, game-based activities.

We can’t wait to see the children’s enthusiasm and creativity continue to shine in every aspect of their learning!
