Key Information
- Homework will be set every Friday and should be submitted by the following Friday.
- TT Rockstars battles will run weekly Friday- Friday. If your child needs a login, let their class teacher know.
- PE lessons will take place every Friday. Children must have full PE kit in school on these days. Earrings must be removed at home or children must be able to take out the earrings themselves.
- The children will be able to choose their own reading books from our bookshelf which matches their Accelerated Reading colour; please read regularly with the children at home.
- Music: in Year 4, the children will be learning the violin and will be allocated an instrument in the coming weeks. Our lessons are every Thursday. Please make sure your child brings their violin to school on this day.
- Multiplication tables check: in June, all children in Year 4 will be taking a multiplication tables test online. This will test the children's recall of all tables up to 12.
- Library: The children will have regular opportunities to visit the school library, but also have access to a choice of books in their classroom.

Autumn Term – Exploring the Ancient World 🌍🏛️
This term, Year 4 will embark on an exciting journey through time and across the globe as we discover how powerful natural forces and ancient civilisations have shaped the world we live in today. From volcanic eruptions to Roman Britain, our learning will be packed with opportunities to investigate, create and challenge our thinking.
Our main History topic explores Roman Britain. We'll discover why the Romans invaded Britain, how they changed lives of the people who lived there and whether their influence was ultimately positive or negative. Through stories, artefacts and historical evidence, we'll build our understanding of one of Britain's most significant periods in history.
In English, our Roman theme continues as we immerse ourselves in exciting texts including Romulus and Remus, The Journal of Iliona and Escape to Pompeii. The children will write myths, diary entries and historical narratives before researching Boudicca to produce an engaging biography. They'll also experiment with the structure and imagery of haiku poetry.
In Science, we'll investigate the fascinating world of states of matter, exploring solids, liquids and gases through practical experiments. We'll discover how materials change when heated and cooled and investigate evaporation, condensation and the water cycle through scientific enquiry.
Our Geography lessons will take us to some of the most dramatic places on Earth as we learn about volcanoes, the Ring of Fire, tectonic plates and the layers of our planet. We'll explore how these powerful natural processes shape the Earth's surface.
Creativity will play a big part in our learning too. Inspired by ceramic artist William De Morgan, we'll create our own Roman clay tiles featuring the mythical Gorgon's Head. In Design and Technology, we'll apply our cooking skills by preparing a healthy Roman-inspired meal fit for an emperor while learning about nutrition and balanced diets.
Technology will support our learning across the curriculum. In Computing, we'll investigate how the internet works, why it is important to evaluate online information carefully and create our own audio recordings as we develop podcasting skills.
Our Maths lessons will strengthen children's understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, before moving on to area and multiplication and division, developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving throughout.
Beyond the classroom, children will continue building confidence through French, where they'll learn to introduce themselves and develop key vocabulary. In Music, PE, RE and RSHE, they'll develop new skills, work collaboratively and reflect on important themes including friendship, respect, inclusion and different beliefs.
The Autumn term promises to be an exciting term full of discovery, creativity and memorable learning. We can't wait to see the children immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Romans and beyond! 🌋🛡️
