Key Information

All homework is given out on a Friday. Whilst it is not an obligation to hand it in, we are always happy to see what the children have managed to do at home.
Homework consists of a mixture of Maths and English, and is provided in order to consolidate learning. This means that any homework given will be based on what has happened in the lessons and children (in theory) should be able to access it independently. Unless stated, homework should take no longer than half an hour per week.
Please ensure that your children are reading every day for 10 minutes. This has the biggest impact on their academic success – 10 minutes reading every day increases their chances of achieving good grades at 16 by 90%. We will continue to send your child home with a reading book matched to their ability and one to share with an adult that they have chosen.
- PE lessons will take place every _________ and ________. Children must have full PE kit in school on these days. Earrings must be removed at home or children must be able to take out the earrings themselves. This is a crucial part of the curriculum and one in which all children should participate. All children in the school will have two hours of timetabled sport and PE per week. If your child is unable to take part (for a medical reason), please provide a note.

Autumn Term – A Wonderful Start to Learning! 🍂
We are delighted to welcome our Year 1 children as they begin their exciting journey through Key Stage 1. The Autumn Term is all about building confidence, developing independence and fostering a love of learning through exciting, practical and creative experiences. From exploring our local community to discovering amazing animals, every day will bring new opportunities to learn and grow.
In English, we will share a wonderful collection of stories including You Choose, The Enormous Potato, I Want My Hat Back, The Bog Baby, Owl Babies and Dear Father Christmas. These engaging books will inspire the children to write imaginative stories, create descriptive characters and even compose their own letter to Father Christmas. Along the way, they will build confidence as readers and writers while developing their vocabulary, handwriting and communication skills.
Our Mathematics lessons will establish strong foundations as we explore place value, addition and subtraction and shape. Children will use practical equipment, games and investigations to develop number sense, compare quantities, recognise patterns and become increasingly confident when solving mathematical problems.
In Science, our topic is Animals, Including Humans. The children will identify and name a variety of common animals, learn about different animal groups and discover what carnivores, herbivores and omnivores eat. Through observation and discussion, they will begin to understand the similarities and differences between living things.
Our learning about the world starts close to home. In History, children will explore The History of Barnfields and its Community, comparing school life in the past with today and discovering how schools have changed over time. In Geography, they'll develop their fieldwork skills by exploring the local area around Barnfields and Wildwood, learning about where they live and the features of their local environment.
Creativity will be at the heart of the curriculum throughout the term. In Art, children will experiment with drawing, collage and mark-making while exploring spirals, inspired by the work of artist Molly Haslund. In Design and Technology, they will design and make their own hand puppets, developing cutting, joining and decorating skills while bringing their imaginative ideas to life.
Technology also plays an important role in Year 1. In Computing, children will learn about the different types of technology they use every day and how to use them safely and responsibly. They'll also create their own digital artwork, exploring painting tools and developing confidence using computers and tablets.
As the term progresses, our Music lessons will be full of singing, rhythm and movement through the units Hey You! and Rhythm in the Way We Walk and the Banana Rap. Towards Christmas, we'll enjoy learning festive songs as we prepare for seasonal celebrations.
Alongside all of this, children will continue to develop socially and emotionally through PE, RE and RSHE, building friendships, learning how to work collaboratively and becoming confident, caring members of our school community.
The Autumn Term is always a very special one in Year 1. It is a time for new friendships, exciting discoveries and growing independence, and we are looking forward to celebrating every success with the children as they embark on this wonderful first year in Key Stage 1. 🌟
