History Subject rationale

Our History rationale explains how we deliver a curriculum that builds a deep understanding of the past and its influence on the present. Drawing on the most recent educational research, we design a coherent and knowledge-rich learning journey that develops both substantive knowledge (key events, people, and concepts) and disciplinary knowledge (how historians investigate and interpret the past). Through carefully sequenced units, enquiry-led lessons, and repeated encounters with core concepts, pupils learn to think critically, weigh evidence, and form reasoned judgments. We foster curiosity and encourage meaningful connections between historical periods and contemporary issues, promoting cultural awareness and critical thinking. Purposeful assessment and retrieval practice ensure progression and mastery, equipping pupils to understand the complexity of history and its relevance to their lives and the wider world.
