Online safety
The internet is essential in 21st century life for education, business and social interaction. As children move up through the school their access to various types of technology increases and it stands to reason that their exploration and curiosity increases too. Social media, online games, websites and apps can be accessed through mobile phones, computers, laptops and tablets – all of which form a part of children and young people’s online world; it is an integral part of children and young people’s lives. The positives of the digital world overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives but children, schools and parents all need to be aware of various online risks. Online Safety Newsletter at Barnfields
To support you in educating your children and to help keep them safe online we send out a monthly online safety newsletter. This will guide you on any current safety tools for identified websites and give you a general overview of the ways to keep your children safe when using the Internet.
In addition, there is an annual Parental Controls Booklet to support you with helping to protect your child online. This guide will help you to set up parental controls to provide your child with a safer online environment. Parental controls can help to protect your child from seeing something that they shouldn’t - although it is important to emphasise that no system is effective all of the time, so it is important to engage with your child and talk to them about their online life regularly. You will find the latest Parental Controls Booklet below with details on Operating Systems, Home Internet, Consoles, Social Media, TV/Streaming, Search Engines, Mobile Devices and Smart Devices.
Furthermore, we would like to share Ofcom’s annual ‘Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes’ report which offers a detailed rundown of how young people used and experienced the Internet during the previous year. During May 2026, Ofcom released their annual Media Use and Attitudes Report, detailing the findings of several surveys and their implications for parents, children and young people in the UK. These statistics often include plenty of thought-provoking information relating to online safety. The full report is attached below.
