Year 1

Hello, everyone,

Welcome to the Year 1 page. Within this section of the website, you will find useful information to help support your child. This may include information on trips, PE days, homework, timetables and much more.

Meet the team:

Mrs Turton (1LT) Class Teacher and KS1 Phase Leader

Miss Taylor (1CT) Class Teacher

Mrs Russell and Mrs Maxwell will support learning across the year group too.

Other members of staff your child may come across:

Miss Chesworth (SENCO), Miss Young (PPA teacher) and Mrs Whittaker who takes our P.E. lessons.

Key Information:

PE :

This is a crucial part of the curriculum and one in which all children should participate. All children in the school will have two hours of timetabled sport and PE per week. If your child is unable to take part (for a medical reason), please provide a note.

From the start of the Spring Term, all Year 1 children will participate in two sessions of P.E. These will take place on a Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure your child has the correct kit in school, including warmer clothes for the winter months.

Please remember that all long hair needs to be tied back and earrings removed. If possible, it would be beneficial that children come to school on days they have P.E. without earrings, please.

Homework:

All homework is given out on a Friday. Whilst it is not an obligation to hand it in, we are always happy to see what the children have managed to do at home.

Homework consists of a mixture of Maths and English, and is provided in order to consolidate learning. This means that any homework given will be based on what has happened in the lessons and children (in theory) should be able to access it independently. Unless stated, homework should take no longer than half an hour per week.

Please ensure that your children are reading every day for 10 minutes. This has the biggest impact on their academic success – 10 minutes reading every day increases their chances of achieving good grades at 16 by 90%. We will continue to send your child home with a reading book matched to their ability and one to share with an adult that they have chosen.

Curriculum and Learning:

During the Spring Term, children will continue to build on the skills acquired during the Autumn Term across the curriculum.  In English lessons, we will focus on texts such as The Queen's Hat and Get up, Elizabeth, which link with our history learning this term, which is all about Kings and Queens. We will continue to be developing children's understanding of composing grammatically correct simple sentences which use both capital letters and full stops accurately. In our phonics sessions, we will be continuing our work on learning more of the phase 5 graphemes and will continue to send these home each Friday so that you can support with this at home. Our reading sessions will also continue to take place daily and books will be sent home on a Thursday for you to read at home and then return to school on the Monday. In Maths, we will be extending our knowledge of the place value of numbers to 20 and then to 50, as well as applying this to our understanding of addition and subtraction. Regular access to Numbots at home will continue to support your child's understanding of these key concepts. Please see your child's class teacher if you require a new login.

Our Science learning this term will centre around materials and involve children identifying what various objects are made of and the properties different materials have. They will also explore the changes in seasons. In Art, we will be exploring using watercolours and studying the artist Emma Burleigh. Our Design and Technology learning will see us use wheels and axles to design a vehicle for a monarch. In Geography, we will be studying the weather patterns of the UK and comparing this with the North and South Pole.

As you can see, we have a busy term ahead, and we can't wait to see the children engage in all these wonderful learning opportunities!

Thank you, and any questions you may have, please contact your child's class teacher through the school office. Alternatively, we are at the school gate most afternoons at the end of the school day.

Best wishes,

Year 1 staff
