Times Tables Rock Stars: Play

All children have an individual login for TT Rock Stars and timestables.co.uk. It is important that children have a secure and quick recall of their timetables as it underpins many mathematical concepts. If your child is having any problems regarding logins or passwords, please ask them to speak to their class teacher.

Please encourage your child to read as much as possible outside of school. It would be useful for all children to read a range of genres and authors over the course of the year as this will develop their knowledge and understanding substantially.

If your child is on Nessy, please ensure they access this as much as possible at home. If your child is having any problems regarding logins or passwords, please ask them to speak to their class teacher.

Autumn Term – A Journey Through Ancient Civilisations and Scientific Discovery 🌎🏛️

Year 5 are set for a fascinating Autumn Term as we travel across continents, step back in time and tackle big questions about the world around us. From uncovering the mysteries of the Ancient Maya to exploring the wonders of space and investigating the properties of materials, this term is packed with exciting opportunities for children to think like historians, scientists, geographers and authors.

Our History learning centres around the incredible Ancient Maya civilisation. We'll investigate where the Maya lived, how they built thriving cities in the rainforest and why they were one of the most advanced civilisations of their time. Along the way, we'll explore their achievements in mathematics, astronomy, writing and architecture while considering our enquiry question: How advanced was the Maya civilisation?

Our historical learning links closely with Geography, where we'll explore Mexico, discovering its physical and human features, climate and culture before comparing it with the United Kingdom. Later in the term, we'll broaden our understanding of the wider world by investigating globalisation, trade and the connections between countries across the globe.

English this term provides a wide variety of writing opportunities. We'll begin by experimenting with blackout poetry before using Holes by Louis Sachar to write persuasive holiday brochures. As we explore Maya culture, we'll read the traditional tale Rain Player to inspire our own narratives before moving on to balanced discussions linked to Rewilding. As Christmas approaches, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol will provide the inspiration for letter writing and thoughtful discussion.

In Science, we'll become investigators through two exciting topics. We'll begin by exploring Living Things and Their Habitats, learning about life cycles, reproduction and how plants and animals change throughout their lives. We will then move on to Properties and Changes of Materials, carrying out practical investigations to test, compare and classify materials, exploring dissolving, separating mixtures and identifying reversible and irreversible changes through scientific enquiry.

Creativity will flourish throughout the term. Inspired by the vibrant artwork of Frida Kahlo, we'll create expressive self-portraits influenced by Mexican culture and identity. In Design and Technology, children will apply their engineering skills by designing and constructing a sturdy frame structure inspired by Maya temples and places of worship.

In Mathematics, we'll strengthen our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, before progressing to multiplication and division and fractions, developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through increasingly challenging tasks.

Technology will play an important role across the curriculum. In Computing, we'll learn how search engines and IT systems work before planning, filming and editing our own short videos, developing valuable digital communication skills.

Throughout the term, children will continue to broaden their experiences in French, Music, PE, RE and PSHE. They'll build confidence in speaking French, explore rock anthems and jazz through music, develop teamwork and resilience in PE, reflect on world faiths and strengthen their understanding of friendships, rights, responsibilities and celebrating differences.

The Autumn Term promises to be full of challenge, creativity and discovery, giving Year 5 the opportunity to ask big questions, develop new skills and make meaningful connections across their learning. We can't wait to see where the journey takes them! 🌟
