Pupil Leadership

Pupil Parliament at Barnfields
At Barnfields Primary School, the Pupil Parliament provides children with meaningful opportunities to contribute to school improvement, develop leadership skills and make a positive difference to the school community. Through democratic participation, pupils learn about responsibility, representation and active citizenship while ensuring that pupil voice remains at the heart of school life. The structure enables pupils to take an active role in decision-making, lead initiatives that matter to them and work collaboratively with staff to enhance the experiences of all children across the school.
The Pupil Parliament is organised into a number of departments, each with a specific focus on an aspect of school development. Members work alongside staff and their peers to identify priorities, lead projects, organise events and promote positive change. Each department is supported by a dedicated staff leader who facilitates meetings, provides guidance and helps pupils turn their ideas into meaningful action.

The highest level of pupil leadership is the Ambassador Team, which serves as the Cabinet of the Pupil Parliament. The Cabinet is made up of Yr6 pupils only and is led by Mr Ball. Members are elected by their classmates through a democratic voting process. The Ambassador Team meets half-termly with Mr Ball to discuss pupil views, review ongoing projects from each department, celebrate successes and contribute to school improvement priorities. This ensures that pupils have authentic opportunities to influence key aspects of school life and that their voices are represented at leadership level.

Annual Department Projects
Alongside their regular responsibilities, each department undertakes an Annual Flagship Project, which reflects the aims and priorities of their department and provides an opportunity to create meaningful and lasting change. This is decided by the October half-term at the latest. These projects allow pupils to put their ideas into action, develop leadership skills and contribute to school improvement. For example, our Eco Warriors may explore ways to increase biodiversity across the school grounds, while Reading Champions might lead an initiative to promote reading for pleasure throughout the school.
Barnfields Legacy Project
In addition to their departmental responsibilities, the Ambassador Team leads the prestigious Barnfields Legacy Project. Working together as the Cabinet of the Pupil Parliament, Ambassadors identify an area for development and deliver a project that leaves a lasting impact on both current and future pupils. This project represents the highest level of pupil leadership at Barnfields Primary School and ensures that each year's Ambassadors leave a positive legacy for the school community.
